The Sudbury Wolves took a two-game winning streak on the road Dec. 18 in Barrie to take on division rivals the Barrie Colts.
The Wolves took home their third win in a row by a score of 4-1 and improved their record to 12 wins, 19 regulation losses and one overtime loss on the season.
Bjorn Bronas was given the nod in goal on the road for the Sudbury Wolves while Ben Hrebik was the starting goaltender for the Barrie Colts.
Sudbury native Alex Pharand got the scoring started for the Wolves at the 10:15 mark of the first period, his fourth goal of the season after receiving a centering pass from Luca Blonda, with the assist going to Blonda, giving Sudbury a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Pharand struck again for his second of the game from the faceoff circle to the right of Hrebik, assisted by Chase Coughlan and Blonda, increasing the Wolves’ lead to 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
Barrie got on the scoreboard with a goal from Nicholas Desiderio just 59 seconds into the second period, his fifth of the season.
This was after picking up a rebound off of the initial save by Bronas, with the assists going to Alex Assadourian and Gabriel Eliasson, cutting Sudbury’s lead in half to 2-1.
With 8:12 remaining in the middle frame and Barrie’s Gabriel Eliasson serving a minor penalty for Delay of Game, Wolves’ captain Nathan Villeneuve scored on the power play with a tip in from a shot by Gonchar.
This was his 13th goal on the season, assisted by Artem Gonchar and Kieron Walton, restoring Sudbury’s two goal lead to 3-1 with one period left in the game.
The only goal of the third period came at the 1:34 mark, when Kieron Walton scored his 21st goal of the season after skating through several Barrie players, with the assists going to Nathan Villeneuve and Trevor O’Dell, securing the Sudbury Wolves’ third consecutive victory by a 4-1 score.
The Sudbury Wolves are back home on Friday, Dec. 19 against the Guelph Storm, with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m. After that, the Wolves are on a Christmas break until Dec. 30, when they take on the Kitchener Rangers at home.
