The battle for first place: that was what was on the line on Jan. 17 at The Aud in Kitchener between the evenly-matched Sudbury Five with their record of four wins and one loss, and the KW Titans, with their record of six wins and one loss.
Showing just why they’re the defending champs, the Five that came out on top with a score of 113-107, moving into first place in the Basketball Super League.
Five veteran Duane Notice led the way with 22 points in the game.
It was a high scoring first quarter, with the Five holding a slight 30-28 edge by the end of the quarter, with Alex Kotov leading all scorers with 10 points.
The second quarter produced a very similar result, this time with the Five winning the quarter by a 29-28 margin, with Devante Jamison leading the way with nine points in the quarter. Heading into the halftime break, the Sudbury Five lead the KW Titans by three points, 59-56.
The game remained close in the quarter, this time seeing the Titans edge out the Five by a 33-32 margin with Tarkus Ferguson leading the visitors, but Duane Notice for Sudbury leading all scorers. Heading into the fourth and final quarter, the Sudbury Five held a 91-89 lead over the KW Titans.
The fourth quarter was the lowest scoring quarter in the game, with the Five winning that quarter 22-18, with Allen Billinger scoring eight points, propelling the Sudbury Five to the 113-107 victory.
The Sudbury Five return home after winning all three games of their three game road trip on Saturday, January 24, against the Lake Erie Jackals with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
