A couple of schools in Espanola were sent into lockdown Dec. 4.

The Manitoulin OPP said they were dispatched to a local high school at 1:30 p.m. following a report of a possible threat.

As a precaution, the high school and a nearby school (the Rainbow board has identified these schools as Espanola High School and A.B. Ellis Public School) initiated lockdown procedures. Police arrived promptly and conducted an investigation, determining that there was no immediate risk to public safety.

The lockdown was lifted at around 2 p.m. The incident remains under investigation, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available, said police.

A spokesperson for Rainbow District School Board said that in an abundance of caution, there continues to be a presence at Espanola High School today (Dec. 5).

"When we receive reports of any potential risk to a school, we take immediate action," said a statement from the Rainbow board.

"We will always err on the side of caution as the safety of our students and our staff are first and foremost. We thank the OPP for responding quickly. While no threat has been substantiated, the police investigation continues.  Espanola High School shares a building with A.B. Ellis Public School."
