The province police watchdog Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation into a Nov. 14 arrest in Little Current on Manitoulin Island.

At approximately 1:20 p.m. that day, Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle.

The detachment didn’t share details of that incident beyond reporting one person was taken into custody as a result.

Three days later, on Monday, Nov. 17, the person arrested reported “an event took place while in police custody that required medical care.” Neither the nature of that event nor the type of medical care required as a result were disclosed.

“As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP will not be able to provide further information,” the detachment said.
