With Greater Sudbury currently under a flash freeze warning, provincial police are asking the public to take caution due to poor weather conditions expected throughout Northern Ontario today.
Several communities may experience heavy rainfall, snowfall, whiteout conditions on open stretches of highway, and periods of freezing rain, resulting in slippery and icy road surfaces as well as delays due to unpredictable travel conditions, said an OPP press release.
Motorists are advised to:
- Obey all road closures
- Avoid non‑essential travel
- Drive according to weather conditions and reduce speed
- Ensure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies
- Keep headlights on and maintain safe following distances
- Check road conditions through Ontario 511 before travelling
Additional updates will be provided as the situation develops. In an emergency, call 911. For non-emergency police matters, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
Environment Canada has placed Greater Sudbury under a flash freeze warning.
Rain will change over to snow this morning followed by a rapid temperature drop to well below the freezing mark.
Northerly winds gusting 50 to 60 km/h may result in local blowing snow. The combination of snow and blowing snow may result in poor visibility at times.
Roads and walkways may quickly become icy and slippery. Icy surfaces will likely form quickly and could be difficult to detect.
Be very careful if walking or driving, said Environment Canada.
