A 24-year-old man is facing charges for yesterday’s robbery of a convenience store on Elm Street.
In a news release today, Greater Sudbury Police said officers were dispatched to a convenience store at Elm and Beatty streets (a Kwik-Way convenience store) at around 10:40 a.m. on Dec. 16 for a report of a robbery.
“A 63-year-old man (employee) was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being hit in the head with a bottle and assaulted by the person responsible,” police said in the news release.
Police said the suspect fled the scene on foot.
GSPS dispatched officers from Patrol Operations, the Emergency Response Unit (ERU), K9 Unit and members of the Break Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit to the scene.
“ERU and K9 conducted a track that led to a residential building on Elm Street,” police said. “Based on the investigation, officers had reason to believe that the individual involved in the incident was inside the residence. Officers set up containment of the building and members of the ERU began communicating with the individuals inside the residence.”
At around 12:35 p.m., the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody. Officers, however, were forced to maintain containment because they believed relevant evidence was inside the building and other people inside were refusing to leave.
“Members of the BEAR Unit applied for and were granted a search warrant for the residence,” GSPS said. “Around 3:45 p.m., officers entered the building and removed the remaining parties from inside the home.” Detectives executing the search warrant located clothing allegedly worn by the individual during the commission of the offence.
As a result, the 24-year-old man is facing charges of:
- Robbery
- Aggravated Assault
- Disguise with Intent
- Uttering Threats
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
The man was held in custody overnight and will attend bail court Dec. 17 to answer to the charges.
Police “would like to thank community members in the area for their cooperation and patience while officers were on scene.”
