Update: Suspects in New Sudbury surrender to police

Police still haven't specified what the ‘unknown trouble’ was that triggered a heavy police presence on Cambrian Village Drive today and prompted a hold and secure at nearby Churchill Public School

Updated Dec. 17 at 3:25 p.m.: Greater Sudbury Police have advised that the situation in a New Sudbury neighbourhood near Churchill Public School has been resolved now that the suspects have surrendered themselves to police.

Just after 10 a.m. this morning, GSPS officers were dispatched to Cambrian Village Drive in New Sudbury for something police described as "unknown trouble". Reached by Sudbury.com, police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said the nature of the incident was a report one of the people involved was armed with a firearm.

A search warrant will be executed, Dunn said, to determine the validity of the report.

Just before 11:30 a.m., police said individuals involved had been contained to one of the residential units in the area and the Emergency Response Unit was on the scene as police attempted to resolve the situation peacefully.

Churchill Public School, located on Fielding Street and just down from the Cambrian Village housing development, was placed in hold and secure while the incident unfolded, which cancelled school activities for the day, including a school Christmas concert being held at noon. The hold and secure has been lifted.

Updated Dec. 17 at 11:38 a.m.: Greater Sudbury Police have provided an update to an incident occurring on Cambrian Village Drive in New Sudbury.

Police still have not revealed the nature of the "unknown trouble" that cause officers to be dispatched to the area just after 10 a.m. this morning.  

In an 11:24 a.m. update on X.com, GSPS said officers remain on scene, along with the Emergency Response Unit. Again, the nature of the incident is unknown, but police said in the tweet that "individuals involved are contained within a residential unit."

GSPS siad officers continue to speak with the people inside the unit, attempting to reach a "peaceful resolution".

Greater Sudbury Police are responding to “unknown trouble” on Cambrian Village Drive in New Sudbury this morning. As a result, Churchill Public School is under a hold and secure at this time.

About an hour ago, GSPS tweeted that officers were “on scene of unknown trouble. Individual possibly in distress.”

Police have contained multiple housing units in the development and have set up a perimeter.

“Traffic in & out of complex restricted,” police tweeted. “Community members asked to avoid area. Update to follow.”

Churchill Public School is located on Fielding Street, just down from the Cambrian Village housing development. As a result of the police action in the neighbourhood, GSPS requested a hold and secure at the school, Jennifer Harvey, the school’s principal, said in a letter to the school community provided to Sudbury.com.

“As a result, we are cancelling all school activities today, including the festive concert at noon,” Harvey wrote. “Until further notice, please do not visit the school.”
