A 10-day crackdown on bail compliance and warrant apprehensions by Greater Sudbury police yielded 52 arrests for warrants and one arrest for non-compliance during a bail check.
Alongside the 52 arrest warrants they followed through on, 24 new charges were laid, including 17 related to non-compliance, according to a media release issued by Greater Sudbury Police Service on Wednesday.
Related to this, police seized 13.3 grams of fentanyl, 354.6 grams of cannabis under the Cannabis Act and six weapons, including pepper spray, a machete, and a replica firearm.
The crackdown took place between Nov. 26 and Dec. 5, and targeted violent and high-risk offenders currently subject to court-imposed conditions, plus those wanted on outstanding warrants.
Police conducted 82 bail compliance checks on people under house arrest or curfew conditions, and found that 82 per cent were following their court-ordered conditions.
Among those who were non-compliant, police arrested one person and applied for five additional arrest warrants through the judicial process.
In their media release, Greater Sudbury police note they remain “committed to enhancing public safety by focusing resources on individuals who present an elevated risk to the security and wellness of our community.”
The crackdown was part of their Community Safety and Well-Being Plan and involved members of the Community Response Unit, Intimate Partner Violence Unit and High-Risk Offender Investigator.
The effort, GSPS noted, is a proactive measure designed to prevent crime, victimization and re-victimization by ensuring offenders are held accountable.”
