In the latest in a string of hires to shore up their new management structure, the City of Greater Sudbury has announced the hiring of Ken Stuebing Community Services general manager.

A media release announced his hiring, noting that a nationwide recruitment effort led by Odgers Canada narrowed in on Stuebing as the best candidate. He will begin his new role Nov. 3.

Stuebing has more than 30 years of leadership experience in community development, fire services, EMS and emergency management, the media release noted.

Most recently, he served as executive director and fire chief for Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, “where he led multi-year capital strategies, driving sustainable infrastructure renewal and the implementation of community hubs, as well as key initiatives including the city’s first Community Risk Reduction Assessment and successful international accreditation through the Centre for Public Safety Excellence.”

He won’t serve as fire chief in Sudbury, with that role to be filled by Rob Grimwood of Mississauga effective Oct. 27. Meanwhile, Aaron Archibald began serving as chief of Paramedic Services effective July 28. Prior to Archibald’s hiring, Joseph Nicholls, who retired last month, served as chief of both Fire and Paramedic Services.

As for the city’s latest hire, prior to Halifax, Stuebing spent four years with the City of Chatham-Kent as Fire Paramedic chief and two years as acting general manager of Community Development, overseeing departments such as Parks and Recreation, Planning, and Libraries. Earlier in his career, Stuebing served as deputy chief of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

“Mr. Stuebing brings a wealth of executive leadership experience from municipalities across Canada,” City CAO Shari Lichterman said in a media release.

“His dedication to public service and operational excellence makes him an exceptional fit. As a recognized leader in community safety and well-being, he will play a key role in enhancing the quality of life for all Greater Sudbury residents.”

Stuebing will lead the City’s new Community Services department, which consists of Parks and Recreation Services, Facilities and Fleet Services, Fire Services and Housing Operations through the Greater Sudbury Housing Corporation.

“I’m eager to join the City of Greater Sudbury, a community recognized for its innovation, strong civic spirit and dedication to resident well-being,” Stuebing said in a media release.

“Returning to Ontario, where I built much of my career, is especially meaningful, and I’m excited to help shape the future of this vibrant, inclusive and resilient city.”
