Hannah, Laken, Brielle and Eliana, four Grade 8 students at École catholique Félix‑Ricard, recently organized a bake sale in support of animals in need and the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society in Greater Sudbury.

Drawing on their leadership skills, Catholic faith and team spirit, the students mobilized the school community around their project, said a press release.

Their dedication, combined with the generous support of their peers and staff, resulted in $740 raised and donated to the SPCA.

A press release said that the students of École catholique Félix‑Ricard have demonstrated generosity, leadership and a strong sense of community through various charitable projects.

These annual initiatives embedded in the school’s culture serve a dual purpose: supporting local or humanitarian causes while fostering student leadership.

Projects such as the SPCA donation reflect École catholique Félix‑Ricard’s long‑standing approach to leadership education through the school’s Leadership Committee and initiatives in Mélanie Mayer’s Religious Education course, said a press release.

While staff like Mayer provide guidance and mentorship, students lead each project from start to finish, gaining valuable real‑world experience and confidence as young leaders.

“The most meaningful part is seeing students take action and engage with the community,” said Mayer, Grade 7 and 8 teacher at École catholique Félix‑Ricard, in a press release.

“They show professionalism, kindness and confidence, and truly embody the leadership values we cultivate at Félix‑Ricard.”

Over the years, students have led a wide range of impactful initiatives, including fundraisers for SickKids Hospital, food drives for local food banks, donations of clothing and blankets for people and animals in need, and awareness campaigns supporting causes such as hospice care and autism awareness.

Many projects are inspired by personal stories within the school community, further reinforcing empathy and solidarity among students.

“École catholique Félix‑Ricard extends its sincere congratulations to Hannah, Laken, Brielle, and Eliana for their commitment and leadership,” said a press release.

“Through ongoing initiatives, the school continues to empower students to become compassionate, engaged citizens, proving that with dedication and collaboration, even small actions can make a meaningful difference.”
