'Door kick challenge' has police warning of criminal charges

The Ontario Provincial Police are sounding the alarm over a disturbing new social media trend known as the 'door-kick challenge,' which has led to property damage and fear among residents

A viral online prank involving people forcefully kicking doors for internet clout has prompted a stern warning from the Temiskaming detachment of the OPP.

It is warning the public about the dangerous and unacceptable "door-kick challenge" currently trending on social media platforms.

"Reports indicate that similar incidents have occurred in the region, and police are urging that this behaviour needs to stop immediately," says Provincial Constable Martin Thibault in a news release.

This challenge involves pranksters forcefully kicking or striking the doors of homes while recording the act for social media. These incidents can cause significant property damage and fear for the occupants.

Participating in this trend may lead to serious charges under the Criminal Code, including break and enter, mischief to property, causing a disturbance, and trespassing.

"There is no excuse for this behaviour, and the intent to create a video or participate in a trend does not reduce criminal responsibility," says Thibeault. "Police are advising individuals to stop participating in this challenge immediately and to understand that entering or attempting to enter someone's home by force is a crime. Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with youth about the legal consequences and the potential dangers of confronting homeowners."

Homeowners and victims are urged to report all incidents of suspicious activity, property damage, or attempted door-kicking. If it is safe to do so, they should document damage and provide video footage to investigators. Preventive measures such as outdoor lighting, doorbell cameras, or motion-activated devices may help deter future incidents.

"The OPP takes these reports seriously and stresses that this behaviour is not a prank; it is a criminal offence that puts both participants and residents at risk. The OPP will investigate all incidents and lay charges when appropriate."

CRIMINAL CONSEQUENCES
Participating in this trend may lead to serious charges under the Criminal Code, including:
• Break and Enter
