A view of Meatbird Lake Park, which the City of Greater Sudbury sold to Vale for $4 million in 2021; money which the city has retained for use in developing a comparable recreational facility in the Lively/Walden area.

The city is hosting a public open house on Nov. 26 to launch and receive feedback on conceptual designs for the proposed Lively recreation facility options.

The event will take place in the Michael Vagnini Community Hall at the T.M. Davies Arena from 7-8:30 p.m.

These designs have been years in the making, dating back to a 2021 city council decision to sell Meatbird Lake Park to Vale Canada Ltd. for $4 million.

Composed of 10 Walden/Lively residents, the Lively Recreation Advisory Panel was formed to help determine how the $4 million should be spent.

Two rounds of public consultation followed, and 3rdLine Studio was enlisted last year to narrow in on a preferred recreational amenity and location for city council consideration.

Three short-listed locations included:

  • Lively Ski Hill property (231 First Ave.)
  • Anderson Farm property (550 Municipal Rd. 24)
  • Greenspace adjacent to the Lively Citizen Service Centre/Library (15 Kin Dr.)

The Anderson Farm Museum Heritage Society came out “strongly” against the possibility of an outdoor recreational facility being built on the 14-acre heritage site in Lively.

“The board was appalled to learn that the site was even considered to be one of the possible locations,” Anderson Farm Museum Heritage Society president Leslee Salo told Sudbury.com earlier this year.

“First and foremost, one of our goals is to ensure that the Anderson Farm Museum and its physical assets are preserved and protected, we are trying our best to make sure this continues to happen.”

A team from 3rd Line Studio will present the conceptual designs for all three sites during the Nov. 26 open house, as well as share the preferred option identified by the advisory panel.

Public feedback will be sought both during the meeting itself, as well as online at overtoyou.greatersudbury.ca until the online comment form closes on Dec. 19.

The information shared during the Nov. 26 meeting, including designs, will be posted to the website following the meeting.

Feedback received will join the panel’s work in a project update for city council consideration in the spring.
