The City of Greater Sudbury announced three new general managers on Friday.
The appointment came following a national search by Odgers Canada to fill roles within a restructured leadership team, and all three managers are to report directly to city CAO Shari Lichterman.
Antti Vilkko is the Community Infrastructure general manager, Tyler Campbell is the Community Well-being general manager, and Kris Longston is the Planning and Growth general manager
Both Campbell and Longston held prior roles with the City of Greater Sudbury, while Vilkko joins the city after serving the City of Guelph.
Longston has worked in the municipal sector for more than 23 years, of which 16 have been with the City of Greater Sudbury, most recently as director of Planning Services.
In his latest role, Longston led several initiatives in support of city council’s Strategic Plan, including the City’s Housing Supply Strategy, Climate Action Plan, Employment Land Strategy and Future Ready Development Services Committee implementation. Longston starts his new role on July 7.
Campbell has been with the city since 2011 where he has held various roles, including manager of Children Services, director of Leisure Services and, most recently, director of Children and Social Services.
During his time with the city, Campbell has led several large-scale projects, including the divestiture of the city’s child care centre, the creation of the Lotus program in partnership with Health Sciences North and the local rollout of the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care program. He was recently elected to the board of directors for the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association (OMSSA). Campbell starts his new role on July 7.
Vilkko will join the city on July 28.
“Mr. Vilkko is a strategic and collaborative leader with a diverse engineering management background, including more than 25 years of experience in both the public and private sectors,” according to a city media release.
After 18 years in the private sector, Vilkko joined the City of Guelph in 2016 to manage their Engineering Linear Infrastructure Design and Construction program.
For the last seven years, Mr. Vilkko has been general manager of the Facilities and Energy Management Department, responsible for leading the Facility Design and Construction, Corporate Building Maintenance, and Energy and Climate Change divisions for the City of Guelph.
These three new roles are part of a broader organizational restructuring which a city media release notes provides cost savings to the city’s operating budget.
The changes create separate fire and paramedic chiefs and creates a new department called Community Services.
“I’m excited to welcome Kris, Tyler and Antti into their new roles and to fill these important leadership vacancies, building on our strong staff team here at the city,” Lichterman said in a media release.
“The changes to our organizational structure demonstrate our commitment to finding efficiencies, reducing layers of management where possible and ensuring our resources are focused on delivering the services our community needs.”
