Although blue box recycling responsibilities will transfer from the municipality to producers on Jan. 1, not much is anticipated to change at the curbside.
Although the list of accepted materials may change, there appears to be little difference between the list of items accepted as of Jan. 1, available by clicking here, and the city' s current list of accepted items, available by clicking here.
Cardboard boxes, boxboard, paper laminate packaging, paper laminate containers, cartons and paper will continue to be accepted. Minor discrepancies include paperback and hard-cover books no longer being accepted.
New informational magnets with updated recycling contact details will be dropped into blue boxes between Dec. 9-26, so the city urges residents to make sure blue boxes are at curbside during your scheduled collection day.
Key changes, the city noted in a recent media release, include:
- Program Responsibility: Producers of blue box materials will now handle all operational and financial responsibility.
- Who to Contact: Starting Jan. 1, contact WM for questions, collection concerns, or new/replacement blue boxes: Phone: 1-800-561-1655, or email [email protected]
- Accepted Materials: The list of acceptable Blue Box items may change. Details can be found at: circularmaterials.ca/Sudbury
- Yellow Box Program: The program will continue with changes and separate collection (participants will receive details by mail).
Curbside service will remain largely status-quo.
WM will continue residential blue box collection for households and apartments currently serviced by the city, collection will continue on the current weekly schedule (place containers out by 7 a.m. on collection day), existing blue boxes and blue containers can continue to be used, and recyclables dropped off at the recycling centre on Frobisher Street will continue to be accepted at no charge for both residential and non-residential users.
