With Greater Sudbury’s latest snowfall event officially over as of 10 a.m. Sunday, the 24-hour countdown began for all streets and certain sidewalks to be plowed.

Per city policy, all municipal streets and those sidewalks covered by the city’s winter maintenance program (for maps, click here) are to be plowed at least once within 24 hours of a snowfall event ending.

A full-call-out was initiated for contractors at 2 a.m. when a city-wide review of snowfall hit a consistent 8 cm.

The city maps the status of snow plows on an online map, which is available by clicking here.

“Crews work hard to ensure that 3,600 lane kilometres of roadway and 350 km of sidewalk is clear and passable within 24 hours after the end of a winter storm,” city staff noted on social media during a recent snowfall event. “City staff and contractors deployed over 80 pieces of equipment to get the work done.

“While the snowfall has ceased, city and contractor crews continue to work on clearing roads, sidewalks, stairways, and municipal lots, as well as applying sand and salt where needed.”

The city urges residents to wait 24 hours (10 a.m. today) before calling to ask about a street that hasn’t received at least one pass from a snow plow. Complaints can be submitted by phoning the city’s customer service line at 311 or submitting them online by clicking here.

The city follows a road-clearing index by road type.

  • Class 1-3 roads (arterial and secondary collector roads) are brought down to a bare or near-bare pavement level within three to eight hours of a snow storm ending.
  • Class 4-6 roads (residential or rural) are brought down to a snow-packed and sanded surface within eight to 24 hours of a snow storm ending.
  • Sidewalks are brought down to a snow-packed and sanded surface within 24 hours of the end of a storm.
  • Bus stops are brought down to a snow-packed and sanded surface within 24 hours of the end of a storm.
