A year later, search for missing M’Chigeeng woman continues

Juanita “Winnie” Migwans of M’Chigeeng First Nation was last seen Oct. 4, 2024 on Riverside Drive in M’Chigeeng. The search for her has continued ever since, with the investigation being led by the Ontario Provincial Police in collaboration with the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service (UCCM APS).

It has been more than a year since 31-year-old Juanita “Winnie” Migwans of M’Chigeeng First Nation has been seen.

She was last seen Oct. 4, 2024 on Riverside Drive in M’Chigeeng. The search for her has continued ever since, with the investigation being led by the Ontario Provincial Police in collaboration with the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service (UCCM APS).

On Nov. 19, just past the one-year mark of Migwans’ disappearance, MAPS and the OPP released a video about Migwans’ disappearance to keep her story in the public eye. 

“To mark the one-year anniversary of her disappearance, UCCM APS released a new awareness video in hopes of generating fresh leads and encouraging anyone with information to come forward,” the police service said in a news release. “Her family and friends remain deeply concerned for her well-being and continue to hold  hope that new information will bring her home.”

“Juanita’s disappearance is part of the ongoing national crisis of Missing and Murdered  Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S+), which continues to devastate  families and communities across Canada,” police said in the news release. “According to the Assembly of First Nations, Indigenous women and girls make up 11 per cent of all missing women in Canada despite representing only 4.3 per cent of the population.”

Migwans is described as standing approximately 5-6 with a slender build, brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion. She has multiple piercings in her right ear and distinctive tattoos on her body, including one of a bird carrying a ribbon reading “THIS TOO SHALL PASS” on  

her left foot, and a small heart on her left ankle. She was last seen wearing black pants and a  black shirt.
