Maureen Jessop has spent decades behind the wheel, giving her time and compassion to help cancer patients get to and from their treatments.
At 81 years old, she continues to dedicate herself to driving for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope program—a role she’s held since 1999.
For Maureen, helping others is deeply personal. After losing both her daughter and son to cancer, she committed herself to making life a little easier for patients facing the same difficult journey.
Sudbury.com was delighted to surprise Maureen with a Random Act of Kindness to show her that her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed and to thank her for everything she’s done for the community.
“I was totally surprised and shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” Maureen shared. “It was just a lovely surprise.”
“I absolutely love it,” Maureen said when asked about her years of volunteering. “I find it so rewarding because it’s a way of giving back and helping others.
Sudbury.com’s surprise delivery included gift baskets with treats and gift cards to her favourite restaurant along with a bouquet of flowers.
Maureen’s kindness goes even further than just her volunteer work. She has always been the friend who’s “just a phone call away” if anyone needs a ride. She’s also the heart of her friend group of 14 people, who still meet for monthly lunches.
Despite facing her own health challenges, Maureen remains upbeat and ready to lend a hand.
“Maureen’s compassion and good heart has touched countless lives,” said Irene Sacchetto, Maureen’s friend and Random Act of Kindness nominator. “Kudos to people like her who understand the need for a ride and some care when they are experiencing health issues.”
