Cemeteries are not often the place where people host a barbecue, but that’s exactly what the St. John’s Cemetery Volunteer Improvement Group has planned once again.
This year, the annual barbecue to support the upkeep of the Garson cemetery is slated for June 23.
For 31 years, a group of dedicated volunteers have taken it upon themselves to keep the cemetery in good condition. The group was founded in 1993 by John Monaghan, and counts more than 20 people who keep the cemetery on the Garson-Coniston Road in good order.
“Over the past three decades, the group has initiated and completed a remarkable array of 36 significant projects, transforming the cemetery into a serene and well-maintained resting place for loved ones,” the group told Sudbury.com. “The group's accomplishments are not just a series of tasks completed, but are milestones that represent their dedication and love for their community.”
As stated, the volunteers have undertaken numerous projects at the cemetery over the past three decades.
The group rebuilt two cremation gardens in 2020. In 2021, they levelled monuments and raised flat markers to improve the cemetery's appearance and functionality. Two years ago, new cedar trees were added and benches were painted and maintained.
Last year, the volunteers were presented with a Civic Award for Volunteerism from the City of Greater Sudbury for their efforts.
The St. John's Cemetery Volunteer Improvement Group includes Gilles Barbe, Terry Lynds, Ken Belanger, Paul Lizotte, Gord Brown, Rob Millar, Dave Drake, Rod McHugh, Paul Dupuis, John Monaghan, Stan Hayduk, Normina Monaghan, Rolly Lamarche, Kerri Monaghan, Blair Lamarche, Grant Murphy, Morris Lamothe, Rod Rienguette, Terry Larocque and Ben Scagnetti Sr.
The volunteers host their eighth annual barbecue on Sunday, June 23 from 12-3 p.m. at St. John's Cemetery in Garson.
“This event is an excellent opportunity for the community to unite, enjoy delicious food, and support a worthy cause. All proceeds from the barbecue will go to the Sudbury and Garson Food Banks, continuing the group's tradition of giving back to the community.”
The barbecue will feature hamburgers, hot dogs, refreshments and cake, with multiple door prizes adding to the excitement.
