Video: Man uses drone to capture stunning icebreaking footage

When Jaroslaw Kalmuk moved to Midland, he started a new hobby that's become a passion and now his videos offer a unique perspective on local life

MIDLAND — A Midland man continues to capture some special views from above.

While visiting Midland Bay this week, Jaroslaw Kalmuk captured impressive video of Canadian Coast Guard icebreaking activities carried out by the CCGS Vincent Massey to clear a path for CSL Thunder Bay to come into Midland harbour.

“It’s my hobby, Kalmuk tells MidlandToday. “Fly my drones, film whatever catches my eye, then edit everything in the DaVinci Resolve app and upload onto YouTube.”

Kalmuk and his family moved to Midland in November 2023 from Mississauga. The 65-year-old, who turns 66 later this month, describes himself as semi-retired since he still does odd jobs.

While he’s originally from Poland, Kalmuk has lived in Canada for “more decades than I lived (in Poland).”

To shoot the icebreaking video, he staked out a spot at Midland Bay Landing and then headed to the town dock area once the ships got closer to the grain elevators.

“This is the hobby that has outlasted all the other hobbies,” Kalmuk jokes. “It keeps me busy,”

Kalmuk’s You Tube site has a number of videos that give a bird’s eye view to a number of local activities and sights, including a fun video titled “Pigeons training flight in Midland.”

And for train aficionados, he even captured the recent arrival of the CPKC Holiday Train.

The train tours Canada and the U.S. Nov. 19 through Dec. 21, raising money, food and awareness to support food banks across its network.

“Professional musicians play free concerts from the brightly decorated train's stage. CPKC donates to the local food bank at each stop and encourages all attendees to make a monetary or heart-healthy food donation,” Kalmuk says of his inspiration for capturing the moment.

But for those who prefer their videos on the water rather than rail, Kalmuk completed a very fun and quick compendium celebrating Midland harbour over the course of 2025.

“Since I didn’t have any new video material, I thought it would be a good idea to recycle videos from the last 12 months to wrap up the year.”
