
Here’s the first red flag: Ontario’s Ministry of Health still uses a system from the 1980s to process OHIP claims filed by doctors. Not surprisingly, that decades-old system has no ability to automatically identify potentially suspicious entries.
But in her annual report released this week, auditor general Shelley Spence found plenty of head-scratching examples — including doctors billing for more than 24 hours of services in a single day, treating more than 100 patients per day, or working 365 days a year.
All told, Spence recommends that the Ford government review up to $665 million in payments that may not have been appropriate.
