Sault College is expanding its commitment to hands-on, experience-driven education this fall with the launch of three new programs designed for careers that are rapidly growing across Ontario and beyond.

Each program, Plumbing Techniques, Computer Networking & Cyber Security, and Construction Engineering Technician, reflects the college’s new “Think Beyond the Desk” campaign. Learning doesn’t only happen in class, but in shops, labs, simulated environments, and real-world settings.

Training for What Ontario Needs Most

Across the province, demand for skilled workers in trades, construction, and technology continues to rise. Sault College’s new programs were created in direct response to employer needs, industry trends, and the increasing importance of practical skills.

Rather than building these programs around lectures alone, the college focuses on immersive, hands-on learning from day one. Students won’t just hear about how systems work; they’ll install, configure, diagnose, and build them themselves.

Plumbing Techniques

With a rising need for licensed tradespeople, the Plumbing Techniques program gives students a strong introduction to residential, commercial, and industrial plumbing systems.

Learners spend extensive time in fully equipped shops where they cut, join, install, troubleshoot, and test real materials and fixtures. The focus is on mastering practical skills, from reading blueprints to understanding installation codes, so graduates leave ready for apprenticeships and employment.

It’s training built for people who want to learn by doing - not watching.

Computer Networking & Cyber Security

Every industry now depends on secure networks and cyberattacks are a constant threat. Sault College’s new Computer Networking & Cyber Security program prepares students to set up, manage, and defend the digital infrastructure that organizations rely on.

Inside networking labs, students configure routers, switches, servers, and security tools in an environment that mirrors the real world. They respond to simulated threats, secure systems, and learn how to keep networks resilient.

This program meets a critical labour market need: Ontario employers consistently cite cyber security and networking professionals as top hiring priorities.

Construction Engineering Technician

From new homes to major infrastructure projects, construction is booming, and so is the need for skilled technicians who understand both the engineering principles and the practical realities of the job.

Students in this program split their time between labs, shops, field-based learning and a co-op experience that puts them on real job sites. They work with surveying equipment, study building materials, practice project planning, and learn the technical standards that shape modern construction.

By the time they graduate, students have real, industry-backed experience under their belt; the kind employers increasingly expect.

Learning That Pays Off

Hands-on training doesn’t just build confidence, it leads to stronger job outcomes. A 2024 report by the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario found that “experiential learning had a significant impact on employment rate and graduates’ employment in jobs related to their field of studies” (Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario, 2024).*

This aligns closely with what Sault College graduates say; that learning through real projects, real equipment, and real environments helped them transition quickly and successfully into their careers.

A Community Built for Focus and Opportunity

Sault Ste. Marie offers a blend of opportunity and environment that many students find ideal. Programs benefit from strong local industry connections, while the surrounding lakes, forests, and northern landscapes give students space to recharge and stay grounded.

For learners seeking both practical skill development and a supportive place to grow, the region, and the college, create a powerful combination.
