Suspect in Sudbury double homicide returns to Canada, taken into custody

Border agents nabbed Romaine Sam, 26, when he returned to Canada Oct. 4

A 26-year-old man who was wanted on a double murder in Sudbury this past summer was apprehended by the Canadian Border Services Agency at Pearson International Airport in Toronto Oct. 4 after he returned to Canada.

The suspect, Romaine Sam, was wanted on two counts of second degree murder in relation to the killings at a residence on Paris Street on Aug. 29.

Through the investigation, it was determined that the suspect fled to Southern Ontario shortly after the double homicide occurred and then left the country prior to being identified.

Greater Sudbury Police Service picked the suspect up at Pearson International Airport and transported him back to Sudbury, where he attended Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) court on Oct. 5 to answer to the charges. He has been remanded into custody.

Detectives continue to follow up on information to identify the other two men believed to be involved in the murders.

Anyone with information related to the identities of the other two men involved in the incident is asked to contact police at 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 705-222-8477.

Several other people have also been charged in the case.

Keaton Pren, 44, was arrested on the night of the murders, and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Stephanie Labelle, 32, was arrested for accessory after the fact to the murders on Aug. 31, and Tinique Moore, a resident of Southern Ontario, was also arrested Sept. 6 for accessory after the fact to the murders.

The double homicide occurred Aug. 29 at 1960 Paris St., an apartment complex.

Police were dispatched to that address at around 10:23 p.m. that evening after receiving a 9-1-1 call about gunshots heard inside the building. When police arrived, a man and woman were found deceased on one of the floors of the apartment building.

The 41-year-old female victim was from Sudbury, police said. GSPS said the male victim was a 29-year-old from Southern Ontario, whose name will not be released per his family’s request.
