Sudbury’s colleges move up in research rankings

Cambrian and Boréal sitting on Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges list

Sudbury’s colleges have moved up in the rankings of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges in 2025.

Cambrian College and Collège Boréal are included in spots 32 and 46, respectively, on the list put out by Research Infosource Inc.

The organization is a research, consulting and publishing firm that specializes in the areas of policy, research, business intelligence and analysis on science, technology, innovation, and the Canadian research and development ecosystem.

This year, Cambrian College moved up six places from its previous ranking of 38th place.

Its research arm, Cambrian R&D, works with industry partners in mining, heavy industry, heavy electric vehicle technology, manufacturing, agriculture, and social sciences.

Cambrian attracted more than $4.5 million in applied research funding, an increase of nearly 38 per cent over last year.

Collège Boréal moved up four spots from the 50th spot last year.

Research & Innovation Boréal, which launched in 2020 to focus on applied research, worked on 11 projects over the last year, in diverse areas including agriculture, construction, immigration, social innovation, and mental health.

Boréal attracted more than $2 million in applied research funding, an increase of 16 per cent from the previous year.

Colleges in the top three spots include Cégep de Trois-Rivières in Trois-Rivières, Que., Mohawk College in Hamilton, and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alta.

Together, the three colleges attracted nearly $60 million in applied research funding in the last year.
