The murder rate in Greater Sudbury continues its downward streak in 2024, with only two homicides this year, compared with five in 2023, and 10 in 2022.
One of those charges came early in the year with a first-degree murder charge laid in connection with a fatal stabbing in the area of Cabot Street and Hearn Avenue, near Cambrian Heights. Police were called to the scene at around 8 p.m. on Feb. 2 for what GSPS said was a weapons complaint. Upon arrival, police said first responders found a 20-year-old man with stab wounds. He was transported to Health Sciences North, where he was later pronounced dead.
A 30-year-old man from Wiikwemkoong was arrested the next morning and charged with first-degree murder, which will move through the court system in Gore Bay.
Next, a second-degree murder charge was laid July 24 against Kevin Konrad, though he originally faced an attempted murder charge in relation to an assault on Elm Street.
A 59-year-old man had been found in critical condition after sustaining serious, life-threatening injuries from what police report they believed to be a blunt object.
Konrad, 33, was arrested on site and police considered it a targeted incident. He is next in court on Feb. 27 to set a date for trial.
None of these allegations have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
In the past 10 years, Statistics Canada reported one homicide in both 2013 and 2014, two in 2015, zero in 2016, one in both 2017 and 2018, three in 2019, five in 2020 and six in 2021.
