Sudbury Indie Cinema says it is back in business following technical difficulties earlier in August. September is a new month and the doors are open again, said a news release.
The Indie unveiled an ambitious four weeks of programming with an overall 20 per cent boost in the number of events and screenings over and above what would be typical, said the release.
In part, Sudbury's local cinema house has gone into overdrive to make up for lost time — the two weeks of August that the cinema’s screen was dark due to a technical failure in the booth, said the release.
That issue now being resolved, the cinema staff shifted many of the screenings set for August into the first half of September while retaining other special programming that had already been in the works.
Most notable is the third edition of Studio Ghibli North, featuring nine feature films over the course of three days alongside food vendors with on-theme foods, crafters and more, said the release.
Studio Ghibli North runs Sept 12-14, and early bird passes are on sale until Monday for just $50.
Also new for this September is a flash series running Sept 15-18: Cinema at six/Cinéma á six, including three Northern Ontario premieres and moderated discussions after each screening, with the support of a wide range of community partners.
Each film starts at 6 p.m., said the release.
- Mon. Sept 15: The Vow From Hiroshima, discussion led after the screening by Dr. Richard Denton.
- Tues. Sept 16: Together, talkback led after the film by Indie programmer Simone Widdifield.
- Wed. Sept 17: Casques Bleues/A War Story: Moderated Q&A after the screening with the doc’s director, producer and doc subject.
- Thurs Sept 18: Forêts Urbaine/Urban Forests: Local panel follows the screening moderated by Indie’s Manager Loveleen Kaur with Coalition For a Liveable Sudbury, Junction Creek Stewardship Committee and more.

- A locally shot feature film premiere by Sudbury-based Ben Paquette will take the main stage Friday Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
- On Wed. Sept 3, a screening of The Encampments will see ticket proceeds split with Palestine Solidarity Sudbury.
- Frames and Frequencies, the Sudbury-based Latina Artist Collective will launch its festival line-up at The Indie with a fundraiser on September 10 , followed by the first edition of Abya Yala Latin American Film Festival running Oct 3-5, said the release.
