With the Sudbury Five home-opener set for Dec. 29, the team has begun announcing player signings for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Over the past few days, the club has announced the re-signing of Charlie Marquardt, Duane Notice, Allen Billinger and Nervens Demosthenes, and the signing of Hank Morgan.
Morgan is a Caldwell, New Jersey, native who is joining the Basketball Super League after completing his final collegiate season with Hamilton College.
In his final collegiate season, the 6-6 guard was selected as the 2025 District 1 Men’s Player of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the 2025 Region 1 Player of the Year by D3hoops.com, the team said in a news release.
“Selected as the 2025 New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Year as well, he led the conference with 21.8 points per game and started all 27 games. He led his team in field goal percentage (53.7), free throw percentage (82.1), while averaging 5.8 rebounds per game, 2.3 assists per game, 1.4 steals per game, and shooting 38.1% from three,” the news release states.
“I’m here to defend the throne,” Morgan said in the news release.
Billinger, a 6-0 point guard, played 35 games last season, finishing the regular season averaging eight points per game, 2.2 rebounds per game and two assists per game.
Joining the Five halfway through the last season, Nervens Demosthene was “a key role player that brought energy on and off the bench,” the team said in a news release. Prior to coming to Sudbury, he played 15 games with the Montreal Toundra during the 2023-24 season.
Notice returns for his third season with the Sudbury Five. A fan favourite, the 6-3 guard and Toronto native averaged 16.3 points per game, 5.4 rebounds per game, and 4.9 assists per game last season.
“Notice was instrumental in the Five’s championship run, leading the team in assists during the finals with 20, helping bring Sudbury its first professional title,” the club said in a news release.
And finally, Charlie Marquardt is back for another season with the Five. The 6-4 guard from Rockaway Beach, New York, joined the team last season and “was integral in the Five’s first franchise championship,” the team said in a news release.
One of the BSL’s sharpest three-point shooters, Marquardt led the league with a 45.3-per-cent conversion rate beyond the arc. He finished the 2024/25 regular season with 18.7 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and was a consistent 94.7 per cent from the free throw line.
His message to fans ahead of the 2025-26 season? “Let’s go back to back,” Marquardt said in the news release.
The Five will welcome the Lake Erie Jackals (formerly the Jamestown Jackals) on Dec. 29 to open the season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
That game will also see the Five raise the team’s first championship banner into the rafters at Sudbury Arena.
Besides the Sudbury Five, returning to the league this year are the KW Titans, the Windsor Express, the Lake Erie Jackals, the Montreal Toundra and the Glass City Wranglers.
The London Lightning and the Newfoundland Rogues are pausing their operations this season, the league said in a news release. The Saginaw Spirit has also opted to postpone its entry into the league by a year.
