The Sudbury Regional Competitive Soccer League (SRCSL) held its awards banquet Oct. 24.
Held at the Caruso Club, the event celebrated the league’s 101st season.
The Sudbury Stallions won the eight-team Men’s Premier Division this season, its fourth straight Anderson Cup championship. The Premier Division teams included The Boys, Sudburnia Cyclones, Croatia Adria, Afro-Heritage Jrs., Leopards of Sudbury, Toros Latinos and Toros Latinos Furia.
“The Stallions would also claim its fourth consecutive Dagostino Cup title after a hard-fought win over The Boys in the final of the in-season tournament,” the league said in a news release.
“The Boys, refusing to be shut out of the hardware this season, captured its first major trophy after defeating the Stallions for the Bristol Machine Works Centennial Trophy, awarded annually to the playoff champions.”
Thomas Guscott of The Boys took home the award as the SRCSL’s Most Valuable Player while teammate George Nwabor was named Most Gentlemanly Player. The award for Coach of the Year went to Emmanuel David, also of The Boys.
Croatia Adria captured a pair of individual awards as Nikola Tuttle was named Rookie of the Year and Peter Valentic as Manager of the Year. The title for top goal scorer was claimed by Marcel Diro of the Stallions.
The Over 40 Division was won by the Afro Stars team, which earned them the Gino Cacciotti Cup as the regular season champions. The team also wins the Peter Severinac Trophy as playoff champions. “Meanwhile, SC Italia captured the Milan Vrab Memorial Trophy as the in-season tournament champions,” the press release states. “Richard Oussou of the Afro-Heritage Srs. took home the division’s only individual award as the top goal scorer.”
In the Over 50 Division, Tony Nuziale was awarded the goal scoring title as he helped SC Italia defend the regular season trophy, the Eddie Palladino Cup. Sudbury Athletic squeaked out a win in penalty kicks to nab the Mike Dowling Cup and its first trophy in the Over 50 Division.
“We had another incredible summer of competition,” noted league president Tony Nuziale. “The league continues to be very competitive across all three of our divisions. We’re starting to see the influx of youth in our Premier Division, and it is providing a great brand of soccer for both players and spectators alike.”
The SRCSL has already kicked off its indoor soccer season, running competition in the aforementioned divisions while partnering with the Sudburnia Soccer Club to host a co-ed league as well. Games are hosted at the Lancer Dome on Thursday and Sunday evenings.
