Nickel City Sound, a women’s barbershop singing group in Sudbury, is inviting people to join people around the world in raising their voices in song on World Singing Day Oct. 18.
World Singing Day is a global sing-along held annually on the third Saturday in October. As a catalyst for positive human connection, this one day each year serves as an opportunity to celebrate our global family through the international language of music.
The local event takes place at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium Saturday, Oct. 18 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are free, but there’s limited seating. Register online here.
The 2025 World Singing Day song of the year that will be performed at the event is “All of Us,” along with a long list of other hit songs and old favourites from the radio.
Nickel City Sound is hosting this event in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association. Voluntary donations to Canadian Mental Health Association – Sudbury/Manitoulin are gratefully accepted.
Nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from some form of mental health condition, according to the United Nations. An estimated one in four people globally will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime.
Studies have shown that feelings of depression and loneliness lessen when singing with others. Hormone are released by singing, endorphins that are associated with feelings of pleasure, and Oxytocin, which can alleviate anxiety and stress.
Nickel City Sound members know this first hand, and are often heard to say “I just feel better when I sing!”
Founded by Scott Johnson in 2012, World Singing Day invites people around the world to share a positive human experience by singing together.
“Unlike politics and religion, music has the unique power to bring people together of all ages and backgrounds, and it just feels good,” Johnson said.
Participation on October 18 around the world ranges from singing with friends and family in pubs, parks and homes, to singing with the whole community in the centre of town.
