A traffic stop for speeding has led to multiple charges after a driver attempted to switch seats with a passenger.
On Oct. 12 at approximately 8;30 a.m., Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police officers were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 6 in the Township of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI), OPP said in a news release.
“A vehicle was observed travelling at 119 km/hr in a posted 80 km/hr zone, and a traffic stop was initiated,” the news release states. “Upon stopping, the officer observed the driver move from the driver's seat to the rear passenger seat, while the front passenger shifted into the driver's seat.”
Police said further investigation revealed the original driver was suspended from driving and the driver was subsequently arrested.
The driver, a 37-year-old Sudbury man, was charged with:
- Driving while under suspension - two counts
- Failure to comply with release order
- Speeding 1 - 49 km/hr over posted limit
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Nov. 4.
