The 19U Women’s Sudbury Spartans capped off a historic inaugural season by winning the 2025 Ontario Women’s Football League (OWFL) Fall Provincial Championship on Saturday at Minto Field in Ottawa. In a thrilling, high-scoring matchup, the Spartans outlasted the perennial powerhouse Cumberland Panthers by a score of 64–59, earning their second provincial title of the year.
According to a release from the team, the Spartans’ offense was powered by running back Maddie Veevers, who delivered one of the most dominant performances in OWFL history — rushing for 398 yards on 28 carries and scoring eight touchdowns.
On defense, linebacker Tiia Peura anchored the unit with 15 tackles, earning Defensive Player of the Game honors. The coaches’ selection for Standout Player of the Game went to rookie defensive back Elizabeth MacDonald, just 15 years old, who stepped into the starting lineup for the first time this season. MacDonald made two critical tackles late in the fourth quarter to help seal the championship victory.
In the release, head coach Gord Goddard praised the team’s resilience and growth throughout the season.
“Cumberland defeated us 46–24 just a few weeks ago,” said Goddard. “We were able to jump out to an early lead and never gave it up. Every time we started to pull away, they managed to close the gap — but our players kept fighting,” he said. “This was a total team victory. To win two provincial championships in our first year of operation has been an amazing experience.”
This championship marks the second provincial title in the program’s first year. Earlier this summer, the Spartans captured the OWFL Tier 2 Provincial Championship, finishing that campaign with a 6–2 record and the #1-ranked offense in the league. Their fall season followed suit, as the team once again finished 6–1 with the league’s top-scoring offense.
In the release, OWFL vice president Mark Ouellet commended Sudbury’s rapid rise as a benchmark for new programs in women’s football.
“The entry of Sudbury into the OWFL has helped prove that a team can enter girls’ tackle football and see immediate success — both on and off the field,” he said.
The Women’s Spartans will look to continue their momentum as preparations begin for the 2026 Spring Season, with winter training camp kicking off in early March.
