Rebounding from a one-goal, third period deficit, the Soo Eagles countered with four straight goals to upend the Greater Sudbury Cubs 4-1 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday night at Pullar Stadium.
The Cubs opened the scoring a little more than nine minutes into the contest when Daks Klinkhammer dished off a pass to Kyle Navarro, who whipped a shot past Eagles’ netminder Jace Knoerle.
The assist for Klinkhammer gives him points in six consecutive games and in 18 of 20 to start the season.
After a scoreless second, Lucas Caulfield put the Eagles on the board four minutes into the third as he waited for a pass from Samuel Gold on a two-on-one then wired it by Greater Sudbury goalkeeper Matthew Vahramian.
Sault Ste. Marie then took the lead at 9:06 as Micah Seery helped pressure a turnover, then took a feed back from Alex Povorozniouk up high where he sailed a shot through bodies into the net on a power play.
The Eagles kept coming and notched two more in the latter stages to help secure the win.
Nolan Nemecek made it 3-1 a few minutes later as he pushed a play ahead and while driving down the left wing sent a harmless-looking backhand that leaked through Vahramian.
Capping off the comeback in the late going, Anden Marceau snagged a bouncing puck in his own zone before spinning and sailing it down the ice into an empty net to round out the scoring.
The victory sees the Eagles improve to 8-13-0-1 while the loss hands the Cubs their first defeat in 10 games as they fall to 13-6-1-0.
