Seedy Sunday returns Feb. 1, with offerings for everyone from the experienced seed saving enthusiast and gardener to those wanting to pick up a new hobby.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Collège Boréal.

“Local events like these are more important than ever as they help support seed diversity, which

supports our local pollinators and in turn improves food security for the community,” said Seedy Sudbury spokesperson Rachelle Rocha.

“Our Seedy Sudbury team has been hard at work to ensure there are learning opportunities for everyone at all levels of skill and interest.”

Along with opportunities for exchanging or purchasing locally grown seeds and products from local vendors, the event also boasts highly knowledgeable guest speakers.

These include James Smith of Spanish River Carbonite (SRC) Agrominerals, new to Seedy Sunday this year, as well as long time event supporters Garth Wunsch, Peggie Baillie from Three Forks Farms and Phil Beauchamp of Beautiful Fields Farms and Fruit Trees.

Topics covered include subjects such as gardening in Northern Ontario, the importance of soil amendments, an introduction to seed saving and scion grafting.

As with previous years, participants are encouraged to bring the seeds they’ve collected

from their locally grown vegetables, annuals or perennials.

For those able to pre-package their seeds, they can be in a simple paper envelope clearly labelled with variety and year collected. For those unable to do so there will be a table to assist with seed packaging.
