Sault MPP Chris Scott attended the Greyhounds' opening night block party on Sept. 19, 2025, the same day he is accused of assaulting his spouse.

The court case involving Sault MPP Chris Scott is being played out in private and away from the courtroom.

Scott is currently facing one count each of assault and assault with a weapon.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Scott is considered innocent until proven guilty.

This morning, criminal defence lawyer Michael Lacy advised the Ontario Court of Justice that the high-profile legal proceedings involving Scott are currently “being dealt with out of court,” and that his client’s assault case would need to be adjourned for a “few weeks.”

The rookie MPP, who was arrested under his legal name, Chris Van Scott, did not appear in court today and was not required to because he was represented by his legal counsel.

The 35-year-old was arrested by Toronto Police on Sept. 21 in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred Sept. 19 in Sault Ste. Marie.

He is accused of assaulting his wife with a high chair.

Scott had been a member of the Progressive Conservative Party until Premier Doug Ford removed him from his caucus the day after his arrest.

He now sits in the Ontario legislature as an independent.

Scott has told SooToday that he will not step down as MPP, despite calls to resign that came from the Ontario NDP, Sault Mayor Matthew Shoemaker and local advocates for victims of intimate partner violence.

His matter is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 21.
