Update: Suspect in stabbing of two women in police custody

A 36-year-old man wanted in connection with a double stabbing last night that left a 63-year-old woman dead has been arrested and charged

The suspect in a double stabbing overnight that sent one woman to hospital and left another woman dead has been arrested.

Greater Sudbury Police were dispatched to a residence on Lorne Street on July 2 at around 12:35 a.m. for an intimate partner violence-related incident.

“Information provided was that a community member and a family member had sustained serious injuries after a violent altercation with the community member’s partner,” GSPS said in a news release.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 32-year-old woman outside the residence with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported to hospital by ambulance.

Inside the residence, police found a 63-year-old woman with multiple suspected stab wounds.

“Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased on scene,” GSPS said. “Officers also located two children inside the residence who were not physically injured.”

Police believe the person responsible for the attack fled the scene prior to police arrival.

“The individual is described as a 36-year-old Black man who is 5-7 tall with short black hair and a beard,” police said. “He was last seen wearing light-coloured shorts and a dark-coloured shirt. It is believed that he sustained an injury to one of his legs during the altercation.”

Officers remain on scene at Lorne Street and will be canvassing the area for information and video surveillance footage. Officers have applied for and been granted a search warrant for the residence. Members of the K9 Unit  will be conducting an evidentiary ground search in the area.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact police at 705-675-9171

Just before 11:30 a.m. today, police report locating the man in a wooded area of Alder Street "with injuries that appeared to be self-inflicted."

"He was taken into custody without incident," police said. "Due to the nature of his injuries, he has been transported to the hospital for medical treatment, however he remains in police custody."

The 36-year-old man is being charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada;

  • First Degree Murder
  • Attempt Murder
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Forcible Confinement
  • Choking

As the man required medical treatment, he has not yet attended Bail Court to answer to the charges.
