Organizer of Capreol Days encourages people to check out the town

The community of Capreol is buzzing with activity this weekend as people turned out for the 2024 edition of Capreol Days.

The community festival, which is more than 30 years old, started on Aug. 2 and continues until this evening.

Events included children’s activities at the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre, a large vendors’ fair in the downtown, the Lions Club Duck Race, a dance, family movie night, Slo-Pitch Tournament and more.

The organizer of the festival is Barbara Boucher, who grew up in the Valley, lived in Ottawa for more than 25 years, but three years ago moved closer to her roots back to Capreol, where she plans to spend the remainder of her life.

As the former director of a not-for-profit, she has jumped right into the community, applying her organizational skills not just to Capreol Days, but as the chair of the Capreol CAN, as well as other Capreol community events.

“There’s always events for the young families,” said Boucher. “We have the Capreol Days. We have the Christmas parade. We have the winter carnival. There’s always something going on. That’s nice. And the community is tight-knit.”

Capreol Days is always held on the Civic Holiday weekend so that people originally from the area that have moved away can come back and enjoy the fun, she said.

With free GOVA transportation to the event, Boucher said people from other parts of Greater Sudbury also had the opportunity to check out what the community of Capreol has to offer.

“Come down, even enjoy the beach,” said Boucher, who raves about the beach close to the community’s downtown. “When you come down here, bring your bathing suit, because we have a great beach and we have a great boardwalk, and it’s beautiful.”
