'What we name our pets reflects who we are,' says a new report from Rover.com. In Ontario especially, trends point toward short-and-sweet or culturally inspired picks like 'Rio,' 'Charlotte,' or even 'Mochi.'

The data revealed that Canadian pet parents value uniqueness, emotional connection, and occasionally incorporate cultural pride into their pet-naming choices. In Ontario, the top trending puppy name is Elsie, while the top trending kitten name is Baby, showing a growing love for short, sweet, and personality-filled names.

The survey shows uniqueness matters with 26 per cent prioritizing a one-of-a-kind name, and nearly half say they’ve never met another pet with the same name.

Names are also personality-driven with 46 per cent choosing names based on their pet’s looks or personality.

"From sports icons to blockbusters, current trends are a fun, always surprising source of new dog and cat names worldwide,{ says the report.

"This year, we decided to really dig into the trends and separate them from classic, popular names. After looking at more than a decade of data, we noticed the top 10 names don’t change much year over year. In fact, the #1 names (Luna and Charlie) have grown less than 5 per cent year over year. In other words, popular names are steady favorites but they aren't necessarily trending names."
