Happening Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., the Nishmas Holiday Market — a play on the ‘nish’ sound in Anishnaabe — brings handcrafts, artwork, beadwork and cultural creations as well as live musical performances to the Community Centre at 37 Reserve Rd.

Whether you’re shopping for gifts, or gifts for yourself, head to Atikamekshng Anishnawbek on Saturday, Nov. 29.

Not only will you get to enjoy the new Whippoorwill Café, you can shop at the Nishmas Holiday Market, featuring local Indigenous artists and entrepreneurs.

Running from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., the Nishmas Holiday Market — a play on the “nish” sound in Anishnaabe — will showcase handcrafted goods, artwork, beadwork and cultural creations.

Also on the agenda are live musical performances from Atikameksheng’s own Kendal Cote, as well as artists Elijah Manitowabi from Wikwemikong and Matt James from Mattagami First Nation.

A release from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek band council states that the event will also feature a “fundraising canteen” for the Atikameksheng’s elders’ Trip to Banff, as well as a festive door prize, and access to Whippoorwill Café’s “cozy coffee bar” included with admission.

Located in the community centre at 37 Reserve Rd., Whippoorwill Café, Arts and Culture is described in the release as “an Anishinaabe experience rooted in flavour, celebration, and artistry.”

Born from the vision of three sisters, the café serves as a gathering space and is proudly owned and operated by Paula Naponse, Pam Naponse-Corbiere and Lisa Marie Naponse, all members of Atikameksheng Anishnawbek.

The release also notes that Atikameksheng Anishnawbek plans to host markets throughout the year, hoping to attract visitors to their community, as well as offering a gathering space for their members.

“The Holiday Market reflects our commitment to economic growth, cultural celebration, and sustainable tourism development,” reads the release. “We invite you to come to our Nishmas Holiday Market and share in the Nishmas spirit!”
