Both the junior and senior boys’ volleyball teams at École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier are headed to the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletics (NOSSA) Championships after winning the city championships on Nov. 10.
The Panthers’ recent success adds to a story of passion, perseverance and school pride, said a press release.
It all began during the pandemic, when a group of young volleyball enthusiasts formed the first team at the school. Despite the absence of official leagues due to health restrictions, these determined students were able to continue their passion through internally organized inter-school leagues, helping to maintain team spirit and the students’ mental well-being.
Over time, these athletes developed strong friendships and a deep sense of belonging. What was meant to be a temporary activity has evolved into a recognized sports program celebrated for its excellence, teamwork, and commitment.
The Panthers have since achieved remarkable milestones:
- 8th place at OFSAA 2024-2025 (senior level) – eliminated in the quarterfinals.
- NOSSA Division A Champions 2024-2025 (senior level) – the school’s first-ever title in this division.
- NOSSA Division A Champions 2024-2025 (junior level) – the school’s second title in history.
- NOSSA AA/AAA Champions 2023-2024 (junior level) – finalists in the Greater Sudbury City Championship.
- More than 15 tournaments won in the last four years.
These successes are the result of the dedication and hard work of a team of passionate coaches, whose discipline, leadership and care have helped the athletes excel, said a press release.
“The Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord sincerely thanks the coaches for their commitment and their contribution to the success of the sports program,” the press release said.
