I have been the face of the Green Party for the last 10 years. I will be voting for Liberal Vivian Lapointe in this election. I hope other Greens will too. I want to explain why.
First, I am committed to fighting climate change, and that means stopping Pierre Poilievre and his gang. Poilievre deluded the country into abandoning the carbon fee and dividend. He did serious damage to Canada and his policies will kill more people as the effects of global warming accelerate.
Poilievre does not understand the danger of climate change. He is a tool of the fossil fuel industry, and I do not want him or the fossil fuel industry in charge of my country.
I also hate what he has done to the Canadian political culture. Poilievre's personal attacks on Canada's last prime minister, even blaming Trudeau for global inflation and the world-wide housing crisis, has disgusted me. As an economist, it is clear to me that he has no real understanding of the economy.
I know that Carney understands the economy. I know he understands the dangers of global warming. I believe that Mr Carney is the best leader for Canada right now. I say that as an economist, too.
And finally, I am voting for Vivian Lapointe because we need her in Ottawa. Getting the new Liberal government to invest in building Sudbury's mining brain-trust is the most important and strategic move we can make to ensure Sudbury's future prosperity. We need to attract to Sudbury scientists and researchers who want to escape Trump. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we need Lapointe in Ottawa to take advantage of it.
If we want to get our share of the coming mining boom, we can't just hope for bigger mines — there are not many Sudbury jobs in that.
We have to be the leaders in research and technology. We need to be the centre for metallurgy, geology and exploration. We need to be able to help firms adopt the newest, cleanest and most effective technologies. We need to have funds for research in getting minerals out of the tailings heaps.
