Letter: Time to move on from paper ballots

Inconvenient paper ballots are so last century, reader says, time to move on to more convenient ways of casting a ballot

It was really great to see the 26th premier of Ontario call for an election in February, but for some reason, we’re going to have to vote by mail or go to a voting location to fill in a paper ballot like they had to do back in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Yes, I know, the Pony Express has been updated to using vehicles for mail delivery and they have taken down the hitching rails at the voting stations for the horses, but that is all that has changed.

We are currently living in the 21st century, when every man, woman and child has electronics strapped to their side 24 hours a day for two-way communication. Why not use this technology to make voting super easy for everyone using the internet and bring voting permanently into the 21st century?

Everyone thinks electronic voting is unsafe, but think of this. Canada has about 40.1 million people in it. Every man, woman and child could figure out how to mess up paper voting, but it would be likely very hard to find .001 per cent (40,100 people) in Canada that could figure out how to mess up an electronic voting system with all the safety things involved with it.

My vote would be for internet voting for its safety features 100 per cent of the time. Let’s start using 21st century technology instead of living in the dark ages.
