Letter: Poppy sellers deserve some measure of comfort

A Sudbury.com reader spotted a poppy seller braving the cold outside a local store and though retailers could likely provide more comfort to Legion volunteers

Today, I sat in my SUV waiting for a business to open to do some shopping. It was cold with north winds blowing and light wet snow falling.

While waiting, I viewed in the parking spot across from me an elderly man taking two big bags and a big box out of his vehicle and placing it all in a buggy. He was nicely dressed in only a suit coat filled with medals and I realized he was a Legion member, probably going to sell poppies inside.

But to my surprise and dismay when I entered this business, this same man was setting up at a table just inside the corridor where the very cold north wind was blowing inside.

As I passed by this table to enter the warm store, I wondered why, why was this man given this cold location to sit and sell poppies to the public. Could our businesses not find a safe warm location to accommodate an organization that gave so much to us? Why, when Canadians are to remember those who died in military service, and honour those who served in wartime?

Was this all we could offer after what these military personnel sacrificed for us?
