Letter: Poilievre ‘not worth the risk’ says Liberal Assoc. president

The head of the Federal Liberal Association of Sudbury says Justin Trudeau exit from the political scene creates ‘an opportunity’ for a better Liberal government

Justin Trudeau’s choice to resign created, in turn, a choice for Canadians. With a leadership race now underway, the Liberal Party of Canada is poised to offer Canadians the choice they’ve been searching for: an alternative to Pierre Poilievre and Jagmeet Singh.

In the midst of a Canadian winter, where things are largely dormant, we are experiencing a renewal. A new leader brings new vision, new energy, new focus. There is a lot of opportunity in this renewal.

Here in Sudbury, MP Viviane Lapointe and her team of volunteers, along with the Sudbury Federal Liberal Association, have knocked on over 10,000 doors, made hundreds of phone calls and met with many community groups. Connecting with the community has been a big priority for Viviane and her team.

Local leadership matters, and Viviane’s work on behalf of Sudbury has been significant. Since being elected in 2021, Viviane has delivered more than $400 million in federal investments in Sudbury.

Working alongside Viviane has been the Sudbury Federal Liberal Association, which has been focused on re-connecting with the local Liberal base in Sudbury.

At the doorstep, many people expressed their dissatisfaction with Justin Trudeau. They also expressed equal, if not greater, dissatisfaction with Pierre Poilievre.

There is a reason why Poilievre’s favourable ratings are low. People have good reason to be wary of him. He has abandoned the progressive conservative base for a far right-wing ideology. He uses the Trump playbook and will bring the same chaos to Canada that Trump is bringing to the U.S.

He doesn’t believe climate change is real; he will cut programs many Sudburians receive, and; he will not be able to improve the cost of living any faster than the rest of the world because it’s a global phenomenon. Trump proved that when, mere days after being elected, he walked back his promises of lower grocery and gas prices.

Seniors deserve the enhanced benefits the Liberal government delivered to them. Young families need the Canada Child Benefit and affordable daycare. Pierre Poilievre is not worth the risk. Let’s protect our progress.
