Letter: For HST forgiveness and the economy, we need an election

It seems like every day I read about the incompetent Liberal government messing up and costing us all more money.

The latest failure is the two months of HST forgiveness. It covers very few items that we spend on and by the time any of us figure it out it’ll be over. But not before having cost more money to implement it and more time, effort and cash coming off the backs of small business owners in Canada who have to do the actual work on behalf of those in Ottawa who think they know best about what we all need.

Couple that with a rebate cheque that is only for “working Canadians”. According to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the retiree who worked their entire life in the mines isn’t deserving or in need of help dealing with his out-of-control cost of living crisis.

There is also the disabled. They didn’t pass muster for the arrogant Laurentian Liberal elite. It’s a shame our local MP Viviane Lapointe didn’t find the courage to speak up for those she used to represent. But we all know what happens when Liberals dare object to the PM’s ideas or orders.

And lastly, our economy. Numbers show companies have stopped investing. Business investment in machinery and equipment, the canary in the coalmine of economic growth, dropped 7.8 per cent in the third quarter of 2024.

That’s not a warning — it’s a three-alarm fire. And there’s no one to blame but this government that only offers businesses over-the-top taxes, endless red tape and zero incentive to grow.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) projects that Canada will have the lowest GDP per capita growth of all member countries through 2060. We’re losing our competitive edge at home and on the global stage. And we have Trudeau, Lapointe and Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré to thank for that. What a sad legacy they are leaving us with.

Let’s call an election and start to clean up this mess now.
