Up-and-coming indie theatre company Bird On Stage Productions brings their acclaimed production of “PIGEON!” to YES Theatre’s Refettorio stage in downtown Sudbury Sept. 27 and 28.
A press release said the show follows a successful week-long run in downtown Toronto that drew praise for its bold mix of genres and raw emotional depth.
Critics have called the show “an often hilarious and horrific cross between Sweeney Todd, Frankenstein and American Psycho, peppered with a bit of the darkness of Hitchcock and Batman” (Our Theatre Voice).
The play blends surrealist comedy, vintage horror, and echoes of old-school Yiddish theatre to tell the story of John, a deeply traumatized outsider on a downward spiral, desperately trying to create connection.
It’s a darkly funny and unsettling exploration of loneliness, inherited trauma and the strange things we build and destroy in our search to feel less alone.
Bird On Stage Productions was founded in 2017 out of North Bay and is now jointly run out of Toronto and Sault Ste. Marie.
Proudly Northern Ontarian, Jewish and neurodivergent-led, the company is steadily becoming a recognized name in Ontario’s indie theatre scene, said a press release.
Bird On Stage is committed to creating bold, original work that uplifts outsider voices, blending surreal storytelling with emotional honesty and a scrappy, DIY ethos that reflects its grassroots beginnings.
While Bird On Stage has previously participated in Sudbury’s theatre scene, including as part of the annual PlaySmelter Festival, this marks the company’s first-ever stand-alone production in the city.
“Our team genuinely loves Sudbury, and I have so many great memories here from growing up,”
said Garrett Abrams, artistic director, playwright and co-director. “Getting the chance to bring our work to one of my favourite cities is incredibly meaningful, especially in such a cool and vibrant new space like the YES Refettorio.”
Bird On Stage remains dedicated to helping grow and elevate the northern indie theatre scene, working alongside the many incredible creators who continue to showcase the talent of the region.
The company said it hopes that this Sudbury run of PIGEON! will be the first of many future visits, and that continued support will allow them to keep creating and presenting work in the city.
PIGEON! runs for two nights only at the YES Theatre Refettorio on Sept. 27 and 28 at 7 p.m.
The piece contains mature themes not suitable for younger audiences.
