A 22-year-old man is facing a host of charges after fleeing a traffic stop in the early morning hours of Oct. 26.
Greater Sudbury Police said at around 2:20 a.m. Sunday morning, officers on Elm Street conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at Paris Street “after officers saw the driver of the vehicle make multiple unsafe driving maneuvers,” a police press release states.
“Upon speaking with the driver, officers detected signs of impairment. While officers were getting an Approved Screening Device (ASD), the driver drove their vehicle into a parked police cruiser with its emergency lights activated and then struck another vehicle before driving down Lloyd Street towards the Kingsway,” GSPS said.
Not long after, officers were informed the fleeing driver was involved in a single-vehicle crash at or near the intersection of The Kingsway at Falconbridge Road, and was seen fleeing on foot.
“Members of Patrol Operations and the K9 Unit attended the area and conducted a track to locate the driver,” police said. “Around 3:25 a.m., the K9 Unit located the driver and took him into custody.”
While in custody, GSPS said a breath technician administered further testing for impairment “and the driver blew well over the legal limit.”
Greater Sudbury Police said the man suffered serious injuries during the incident, which police characterize as non-life-threatening. As a result, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoked its mandate and will be investigating.
The 22-year-old is facing several charges:
- Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon x3
- Resist Arrest
- Flight From Peace Officer
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration 80mg+
- Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs
- Dangerous Operation
- Fail to Remain
- Fail to Stop for Police
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
The man attended Wash and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court on Oct. 26 to answer to the charges.
