After scoring a big 6-3 win over the powerhouse London Knights on Friday evening, the Sudbury Wolves were hoping to make it two in a row on Sunday afternoon, but the hometown Brampton Steelheads had other ideas.
Five goals for Brampton in the third period contributed to a rout of 8-2 for the Steelheads, seeing the Sudbury Wolves drop their record to 6-17-1 on the season.
Newly signed goaltender Bjorn Bronas got the start in goal for the Sudbury Wolves for the second straight game while Zach Bowen got the start for the Brampton Steelheads.
The first goal of the game came at the 13:19 mark of the first period came from Mason Zebeski (his fifth of the season) from behind the net, assisted by Jakub Fibigr, giving the Steelheads a 1-0 lead.
With one second remaining in the first, the Wolves tied the game with Chase Coughlan’s ninth goal of the season. Coughlan tipped in an Artem Gonchar point shot, with assists going to Hudson Martin and Gonchar, tying the game 1-1 after the opening period.
Moving onto the second, Brampton’ s Ty Daniels broke the tie 3:42 into the second with his first goal of the season after firing a slapshot from Bronas’ left, with the lone assist going to Kieran Witkowski, giving Brampton a 2-1 lead.
With 10:25 left in the second, Troy Patton scored his fifth of the season after trailing behind the play and snapping a wrist shot, assisted by William Eggleton and Fibigr, increasing the Steelheads’ lead to 3-1.
While on the power play with 1:43 remaining in the middle frame, and with Manuel Amado serving two separate penalties for interference and holding, Kieron Walton blasted in his 13th goal of the season, with the assists going to Nathan Villeneuve and Gonchar, cutting Brampton’s lead to 3-2 heading into the third period.
The final frame saw Brampton throw off its shackles and really unleash their offence.
The Steelheads restored their two goal lead 5:55 into the third, thanks to Peter Green’s first goal of the season, a slap shot from the point, assisted by Mason Zebesky and Troy Patton, making the score 4-2 for Brampton.
Less than a minute later, with Sudbury serving a bench minor penalty, Fibigr scored with a slap shot from the point during the ensuing power play, his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Parker Von Richter and Mason Zebeski, giving Brampton a 5-2 lead.
Later, Steelhead Joshua Avery serving a penalty for cross checking, Brampton scored short-handed thanks to Gabriel Chiarot scoring his tenth goal of the season on a breakaway, assisted by Kieran Witkowski, making the score 6-2 for the Brampton Steelheads.
With 4:57 left in the game, Julian Demiglio scored his sixth of the season for Brampton after taking a pass from behind the net from Eggleton, assisted by William Eggleton, increasing Brampton’s lead further to 7-2.
With just over 90 seconds left to play in the game, Fibigr scored his second goal of the game with a shot from the point that found its way past Bronas, assisted by Reed Gee and Troy Patton, capping off an 8-2 victory for the Brampton Steelheads over the Sudbury Wolves.
The Sudbury Wolves have a firm hold on last place in OHL, one point behind the Oshawa Generals. The Pack now has four days off before heading back home for a game Nov. 28 against the Barrie Colts, with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
