The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation following a weekend shootout between Ontario Provincial Police and an armed man near Temagami North.

On Friday, OPP Temiskaming officers responded to reports of an armed and dangerous man at large in the area.

An emergency alert and shelter-in-place order were issued, while a large-scale search took place involving local officers and multiple specialty units, including the Tactics and Rescue Unit, Emergency Response Team, Canine Units, and OPP Aviation.

Today, officers found the wanted man, and a gunfight started. The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP says it will not be able to provide further information.

An OPP dog was treated for a minor injury.

The Temiskaming Animal Care and Control (TACC) posted on its Facebook page.

"Courage and dedication, officers. TACC wants to acknowledge the remarkable bravery of police dogs and their handlers in treacherous situations and their unwavering commitment to their roles. The past three days, in challenging and hot conditions, ended with injury to a K9 who was involved in the final apprehension actions just south of Latchford and is currently receiving the finest care at Temiskaming Veterinary Services.

"Salute and prayers for you and your handler."
