Modern Mining and Technology Sudbury (MMTS) has launched its annual campaign to boost the profile of the city’s mining industry.
Running Oct. 16-24, the week-long event combines industry-specific workshops and presentations with activities aimed at local youth, designed to hype up the idea of a career in the sector.
“Mining Week is an opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate our achievements, and highlight the important role mining plays in shaping a sustainable future for Greater Sudbury,” Nicole Tardif, chair of MMTS, said in a news release.
The week kicked off on Oct. 16 with a presentation from Colin Pegues, vice-president at IAMGOLD and general manager of Côté Gold Mine, as part of the Speaker Series presented by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM).
On Oct. 21, the mining supply and service organization MineConnect will hold a half-day mini mining forum featuring Gustavo Jurado, a senior economist at the Mining Industry Human Resource Council (MiHR), who will speak about the future of the mining workforce.
That will be complemented by a panel of industry experts speaking about programs, resources and tools available to help organizations attract talent.
On Oct. 23, the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce will host Andre Leite, the vice-president for Ontario at Agnico Eagle Mines, during its President Series Luncheon.
For members of the public, Dynamic Earth will host a series of mining days for elementary-aged children, which will include workshops teaching about the industry and skills related to mining careers.
Members of the public can visit an expansive showcase at the New Sudbury Centre on Oct. 18, featuring mining-themed displays from local companies and post-secondary institutions. The family-friendly event is designed to engage visitors of all ages with interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and career information about modern mining in Northern Ontario.
