Over the past few weeks, workers and families impacted by layoffs in Sault Ste. Marie have seen an outpouring of support from nearby businesses in the Algoma District. These included Alamos Gold's Island Gold District.
In early December, Alamos Gold announced recruitment sessions in a local Sault Ste. Marie hotel, not far from where the layoffs were announced.
Alamos Gold has been promoting the more than one hundred jobs it is looking to fill right away at the mine, a few hours north of Sault Ste. Marie.
“Alamos Gold's Island Gold District has been growing, and we’re only getting started,” said Austin Hemphill, General Manager of the mine, owned by the company since 2017 and situated just east of the town of Dubreuilville.
The two-mine operation consists of the underground Island Gold Mine and the open-pit Magino Mine. The company acquired Magino, next door to Island Gold, from Argonaut Gold last year.
Additionally, the mine’s Phase 3+ Expansion – announced in 2022 – is a major, billion-dollar project which is expected to be completed in 2026.
To help support the mine’s expansion, Alamos Gold is also building a brand new $40 million training facility to help employees get the skills they need.
This new 7,000 m² facility will provide 4,635 m² of improved training space designed to increase the number of trainees, improve retention, and strengthen the labour supply for jobs in emerging and high-demand sectors.
With a focus on the future, and plans to operate in the region for decades, Alamos Gold is aiming to attract people interested in building a career in mining.
“If you’re interested in mining, come be part of something built to last,” added Hemphill, who wanted this message conveyed at the recent recruitment sessions in December.
If turnout is any indication, the interest in joining the Alamos Gold team is high as the company looks to build a growing and dynamic team in northern Ontario.
